Kieron Pollard Appointed Mumbai Indians Head Coach for IPL 2027
Mumbai Indians have appointed former West Indies all-rounder Kieron Pollard as their new head coach ahead of the IPL 2027 season.
Mumbai Indians have appointed former West Indies all-rounder Kieron Pollard as their new head coach ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2027 season. The franchise announced Pollard’s promotion on October 24, elevating him from his previous role as batting coach and placing a familiar face in charge of the five-time IPL champions. He succeeds Mahela Jayawardene, who recently stepped down from the position.
The appointment marks another important chapter in Pollard’s long association with Mumbai Indians. Having represented the franchise as a player for more than a decade before moving into coaching, he brings extensive knowledge of the team’s culture, players and expectations.
Kieron Pollard Replaces Mahela Jayawardene as MI Head Coach
Mumbai Indians confirmed Pollard’s elevation through an official announcement, describing the move as an extension of one of cricket’s enduring player-to-coach associations.
Jayawardene’s departure opened the way for a change in leadership ahead of IPL 2027. The Sri Lankan had two spells as Mumbai Indians head coach, including a successful first stint during which the franchise won three IPL titles.
Pollard’s promotion offers Mumbai Indians continuity because he has already worked within the coaching setup. Rather than bringing in someone unfamiliar with the organisation, the franchise has chosen a former player who understands its approach to building teams and competing in the IPL.
The appointment comes as Mumbai Indians prepare for the next season and look to strengthen their performance after recent campaigns that fell short of the franchise’s historic standards.

Kieron Pollard’s Long Association with Mumbai Indians
Pollard joined Mumbai Indians in 2010 as a young overseas player and gradually developed into one of the franchise’s most influential all-rounders. His explosive middle-order batting, powerful finishing and ability to contribute with the ball made him a key part of the team’s success.
He was part of all five of Mumbai Indians’ IPL championship-winning campaigns in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020. These achievements helped establish Pollard as one of the most recognisable figures in the franchise’s history.
Pollard retired as an IPL player after the 2022 season and subsequently continued his association with Mumbai Indians as a batting coach. His transition from player to coach has allowed him to share his experience with the next generation of cricketers.
His new position gives him broader responsibility for team preparation, tactical planning, player development and the overall direction of the side.
What Did Kieron Pollard Say About His Appointment?
Reacting to the promotion, Pollard described becoming Mumbai Indians’ head coach as an honour. He acknowledged the importance of the franchise in his career and thanked Nita Ambani, Akash Ambani and the wider MI organisation for placing their trust in him.
Pollard also highlighted his connection with the players and supporters, commonly known as the Paltan. He said he was looking forward to working closely with the squad and support staff, developing talent and building on Mumbai Indians’ legacy.
His comments underline the importance of continuity in the franchise’s plans. Having experienced Mumbai Indians’ successful years from inside the dressing room, Pollard will be expected to use that knowledge to help the team compete consistently.
Nita Ambani Welcomes Pollard as Head Coach
Mumbai Indians co-owner Nita M. Ambani welcomed Pollard’s promotion, highlighting his contribution to the franchise over the past 16 years.
She noted that Pollard had become an integral part of the Mumbai Indians family, first through his performances as a player and later through his work as a coach. Ambani also expressed confidence in his commitment and understanding of what it means to represent the team.
The franchise believes Pollard’s experience with Mumbai Indians, combined with his understanding of modern T20 cricket, provides a strong foundation for the new role. His familiarity with the club’s culture could also help maintain continuity during the transition in leadership.
What Does Pollard’s Appointment Mean for Mumbai Indians in IPL 2027?
Pollard’s first major challenge will be helping Mumbai Indians prepare for IPL 2027. The coaching change comes before the next player auction, making squad planning, retention decisions and identifying areas that need strengthening important parts of the preparation process.
Mumbai Indians have a rich IPL history, but their recent results have increased expectations for improvement. Pollard will need to combine his experience of the franchise’s successful seasons with fresh tactical ideas and a clear approach to player roles.
His priorities are likely to include:
- Squad planning: Working with the management to identify the team’s key retention and recruitment requirements.
- Player development: Helping young and emerging players improve their consistency and confidence.
- Batting strategy: Applying his experience as an elite T20 batter to strengthen the team’s approach in different match situations.
- Team culture: Maintaining Mumbai Indians’ established standards while building momentum for the new season.
These are the challenges that come with the head coach’s role; the franchise has not publicly detailed a separate list of specific targets for Pollard.
Can Kieron Pollard Lead Mumbai Indians Back to the IPL Title?
Pollard’s appointment gives Mumbai Indians a head coach with direct experience of winning IPL championships for the franchise. However, success will depend on more than his playing legacy. Squad balance, player availability, captaincy, execution under pressure and tactical decisions will all influence the team’s results.
His familiarity with the dressing room and the demands of Mumbai Indians could be valuable as the franchise begins a new coaching chapter. At the same time, leading an entire team is different from contributing as a player or batting coach, and Pollard will need to demonstrate his ability to manage the broader responsibilities.
For Mumbai Indians supporters, the appointment represents a fresh opportunity to see a franchise favourite take on a major leadership role.
Conclusion
Kieron Pollard has been appointed Mumbai Indians head coach for IPL 2027, replacing Mahela Jayawardene after the latter’s departure. The former West Indies all-rounder has been associated with the franchise since 2010 and was part of all five of its IPL title-winning campaigns.
His promotion offers Mumbai Indians continuity and a leader who understands the team’s culture from years of experience as both a player and coach. The focus now shifts to preparations for IPL 2027 and whether Pollard can help the franchise return to championship-winning form.
