Ayush Mhatre Set for Three-Month Layoff After Hamstring Surgery Ahead of IPL 2027

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have received a setback ahead of IPL 2027, with young batter Ayush Mhatre facing another period

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have received a setback ahead of IPL 2027, with young batter Ayush Mhatre facing another period on the sidelines following a serious hamstring injury. The 19-year-old has undergone surgery for a Grade 4 tear in his right hamstring and is expected to require approximately two to three months to make a full recovery.

According to a report by NDTV Sports, Mhatre sustained the injury while representing Mumbai in their Ranji Trophy season opener against Chandigarh on October 11, 2026. The setback comes after he had already spent several months recovering from an earlier hamstring injury suffered during IPL 2026.

Ayush Mhatre Undergoes Hamstring Surgery

Mhatre underwent surgery at Kokilaben Hospital in Mumbai on Thursday, October 22. The procedure was performed by sports orthopaedic surgeon Dr Dinshaw Pardiwala.

A BCCI source indicated that the surgery was successful and that the young batter was recovering well. He had reportedly started walking slowly with the assistance of crutches by Friday morning.

His recovery will now be closely monitored before he can return to competitive cricket.

How Did Ayush Mhatre Suffer the Injury?

The injury occurred during Mumbai's opening Ranji Trophy match of the 2026–27 season against Chandigarh at the Wankhede Stadium.

Mhatre experienced discomfort in his right hamstring while running between the wickets. He had scored 48 runs in the first innings before the injury prevented him from continuing normally.

The setback was particularly unfortunate because this was his first competitive appearance after recovering from an earlier injury to his left hamstring.

CSK's Injury Concerns Ahead of IPL 2027

Mhatre impressed for Chennai Super Kings during IPL 2026, scoring 201 runs in six innings at a strike rate of 177.87 before his earlier injury ended his campaign.

His aggressive batting and ability to provide momentum at the top of the order made him an important option for the franchise.

Another injury could affect his preparations for the next IPL season. However, his availability for IPL 2027 cannot be determined solely from the current recovery estimate, as his return will depend on rehabilitation progress and medical clearance.

CSK will need to monitor his recovery while evaluating their batting options for the upcoming campaign.

What Does the Injury Mean for Ayush Mhatre's Future?

At 19, Mhatre remains a promising young batter with experience in domestic cricket and the IPL. He also captained India's victorious Under-19 World Cup team.

The immediate priority will be completing rehabilitation and returning to full fitness without rushing the process. A successful recovery could help him resume his development and prepare for future competitive assignments.

Conclusion

Ayush Mhatre's hamstring surgery is a setback for both the young batter and Chennai Super Kings ahead of IPL 2027. Although he is expected to need around two to three months to recover, his eventual return to competitive cricket will depend on his progress through rehabilitation.

CSK supporters will be hoping the youngster makes a full recovery and returns to action in good health.
