The IPL 2026 season produced some outstanding individual performances, and among the bowlers, Kagiso Rabada stood at the top. Representing Gujarat Titans, the South African fast bowler finished the tournament as the leading wicket-taker and claimed the coveted Purple Cap after an impressive campaign.
Rabada picked up 29 wickets in 17 matches, finishing just one wicket ahead of Royal Challengers Bengaluru pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who ended the season with 28 wickets. Rajasthan Royals' Jofra Archer finished third with 25 wickets.
His consistency throughout the tournament made him one of Gujarat Titans' most important players and helped establish him as the leading wicket-taker of IPL 2026.
Rabada's Purple Cap Campaign
The Purple Cap is awarded to the bowler who takes the most wickets in an IPL season. In 2026, the race went down to the final stages of the tournament, with Rabada eventually securing the top position.
Across 17 matches and 17 innings, Rabada bowled 64.4 overs, conceding 626 runs while taking 29 wickets. He recorded a bowling average of 21.58 and an economy rate of 9.68. His best bowling performance of the season was 3/25.
While the economy rate reflects the aggressive nature of modern T20 cricket, Rabada's ability to consistently take wickets remained his biggest strength. His 29 dismissals gave Gujarat Titans a reliable wicket-taking option throughout the competition.
A Tight Race for the Purple Cap
Rabada's achievement becomes even more significant when looking at how close the final wicket-taking race was.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar finished just one wicket behind him with 28 wickets for RCB. Jofra Archer claimed 25 wickets for Rajasthan Royals, while Gujarat Titans' Rashid Khan and Chennai Super Kings' Anshul Kamboj both finished with 21 wickets.
With such a narrow gap at the top, every wicket mattered. Rabada's ability to remain among the leading wicket-takers throughout the season ultimately allowed him to finish at number one.
Experience Meets T20 Cricket
Rabada entered IPL 2026 with years of international and franchise cricket experience behind him. His pace, variations and ability to attack batters with the new ball and at crucial stages of an innings made him a valuable part of the Gujarat Titans bowling attack.
His campaign also demonstrated the importance of experience in a competition where batters increasingly attack from the first delivery. Rabada continued to rely on his pace and wicket-taking ability while adapting to different match situations.
Whether it was breaking partnerships or providing Gujarat Titans with wickets during important phases, his contribution extended beyond the numbers on the statistics sheet.
A Key Player for Gujarat Titans
Gujarat Titans reached the IPL 2026 final, making Rabada's performances particularly important during their run through the tournament. GT ultimately finished as runners-up after losing the final to Royal Challengers Bengaluru by five wickets.
Although Gujarat Titans could not finish the season with the trophy, Rabada's individual achievement gave the team another major highlight from their campaign.
Winning the Purple Cap against a field featuring some of the world's leading T20 bowlers underlined his consistency across the 2026 season.
Rabada's Name on the Purple Cap
The IPL 2026 season will be remembered for several remarkable individual performances, from Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's record-breaking batting campaign to the impressive bowling performances of Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jofra Archer and others.
At the top of the wicket-taking charts, however, it was Kagiso Rabada who finished the season with the Purple Cap.
His final numbers tell the story: 17 matches, 29 wickets, a best of 3/25 and a bowling average of 21.58.
For Rabada, the Purple Cap adds another significant achievement to an already decorated career. For Gujarat Titans, his performances were an important part of their journey to the IPL 2026 final.
Kagiso Rabada's 29 wickets made him the leading wicket-taker of IPL 2026 — and the Purple Cap was the reward for a season of consistent, attacking fast bowling.
