Chennai Super Kings have also undergone a major coaching change, appointing former India fast bowler Zaheer Khan as head coach after Stephen Fleming's long association with the franchise ended.
With these appointments, IPL 2027 will feature a mix of experienced international coaches and prominent Indian cricket figures. Six of the 10 teams will be led by overseas head coaches, while four franchises have Indian head coaches.

Chennai Super Kings – Zaheer Khan
Zaheer Khan will take charge of Chennai Super Kings for IPL 2027.
Zaheer replaces Stephen Fleming, who had been associated with CSK for 18 years. Fleming subsequently moved into a Test coaching role with England.
Zaheer brings extensive experience from international cricket as well as franchise management. He previously worked with Mumbai Indians in senior cricket operations and was also associated with Lucknow Super Giants.
Delhi Capitals – Sourav Ganguly
Sourav Ganguly is the newest head coach among the 10 IPL franchises.
Delhi Capitals officially announced Ganguly as their head coach on October 6, 2026. He replaces Hemang Badani and returns to a franchise with which he has had a long association since 2019.
Ganguly previously served as an advisor and later held the Director of Cricket role across the Delhi Capitals setup. His appointment gives DC a coach with extensive international leadership experience.
Gujarat Titans – Ashish Nehra
Ashish Nehra continues as Gujarat Titans' head coach.
Nehra has been an important part of Gujarat's coaching structure since the franchise entered the IPL. His continuation provides GT with coaching stability heading into IPL 2027.
Kolkata Knight Riders – Abhishek Nayar
Abhishek Nayar will lead Kolkata Knight Riders as head coach.
Nayar is one of the four Indian coaches heading an IPL team in the 2027 season. His appointment adds another Indian voice to the league's senior coaching group.

The former Australia coach brings significant international and franchise experience. LSG will look to build on his tactical experience as the franchise prepares for another IPL campaign.

Jayawardene has a long association with the Mumbai Indians setup and has played an important role in the franchise's coaching structure.

The former Australia captain brings considerable experience from international cricket and franchise leagues. PBKS will hope for greater consistency under his leadership in IPL 2027.
Rajasthan Royals – Kumar Sangakkara
Kumar Sangakkara remains the head coach of Rajasthan Royals.
Sangakkara has been closely involved in Rajasthan's cricket operations and will continue to oversee the team's preparations for the new season.

Flower has extensive experience in international and franchise coaching and remains part of RCB's leadership setup heading into IPL 2027.

The former New Zealand captain has extensive experience as a coach in T20 cricket and international cricket. He will be responsible for guiding SRH through the 2027 season.
Four Indian Coaches and Six Overseas Coaches
One interesting feature of the IPL 2027 coaching lineup is the balance between Indian and overseas coaches.
There are four Indian head coaches:
- Zaheer Khan – Chennai Super Kings
- Sourav Ganguly – Delhi Capitals
- Ashish Nehra – Gujarat Titans
- Abhishek Nayar – Kolkata Knight Riders
The remaining six teams have overseas head coaches:
- Justin Langer – Lucknow Super Giants
- Mahela Jayawardene – Mumbai Indians
- Ricky Ponting – Punjab Kings
- Kumar Sangakkara – Rajasthan Royals
- Andy Flower – Royal Challengers Bengaluru
- Daniel Vettori – Sunrisers Hyderabad
This means Indian coaches account for four of the 10 head-coaching positions, while overseas coaches hold the other six.
Major Coaching Changes Ahead of IPL 2027
Two changes stand out ahead of the 2027 season.
The first is at Chennai Super Kings, where Zaheer Khan has replaced Stephen Fleming after Fleming's 18-year association with the franchise. This marks a major transition for one of the IPL's most successful teams.
The second is at Delhi Capitals, where Sourav Ganguly has moved into the head coach role after previously serving the franchise in advisory and cricket-director positions.
These changes could have a major influence on how both franchises approach player retention, recruitment and their strategies for the IPL 2027 auction.
What Happens Next for IPL 2027 Teams?
With the head-coaching positions settled, franchises can now focus on their squad-building plans for the upcoming season.
The next major developments will include player retention and release decisions, auction planning and the formation of coaching and support staffs. Teams will also assess which players fit the tactical approach of their new or continuing head coaches.
For CSK and DC in particular, the arrival of Zaheer Khan and Ganguly creates fresh expectations ahead of IPL 2027.
